Through her experiments and work blending art with science, AnneMarie Maes investigates the interactions between different urban ecosystems. Her work incorporates DIY, scientific experiments, biotechnologies, live organisms and many other tools and technological artefacts.
[N.A!] Project has supported this Brussels-based artist since 2018 – a collaboration that started with the production of Bee Agency for the Eco-Visionaries exhibition at HeK Basel and continued in January 2019 with a research visit to Elefsina in Greece with artists Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits.
AnneMarie Maes has created a connected beehive combining ecological, scientific and artistic approaches. On the roof of her studio in Brussels and the banks of the Elbe in Hamburg (since March 2019), these installations enable her to remotely study nature, biodiversity and in particular the interaction between these city beehives and their urban ecosystems.
The Intelligent (Guerilla) Beehive, is a project aimed at understanding the disappearance of bees from urban environments. Providing bees with shelter in the city, the hive also interacts with the environment. AnneMarie Maes is also planning to install a third beehive in Brunstatt, Alsace, which is home to the [N.A!] Nature Addicts headquarters.
